Well-designed packaging tells the product’s story. A thoroughly reviewed label ensures that this story is consistent with the formulation, nutrition data and mandatory information.
Reviewing a food label involves more than looking for spelling mistakes. The product name on the front and the ingredients on the back, the highlighted feature and the nutrition table, the date information and the storage conditions should all describe the same product. These connections can easily be overlooked during design revisions.
Start the review with the right file
A photograph of the front alone may not provide enough information for a complete review. Prepare every side showing the product name, ingredients, allergens, nutrition table, operator information and date fields. Fold marks, glare, curvature or low resolution can make the text difficult to read.
Identifying the current file version is also important. Comparing packaging prepared for an old formulation with a new nutrition table can lead to an incorrect conclusion. A simple record system based on the file name, product variant and revision date reduces this confusion.
Review the label through interconnected topics
Product identity
The product name, images and highlighted ingredients should be assessed together. Look for consistency between the impression created by the packaging and the product’s actual composition.
Ingredients and allergens
The review should be supported by the actual formulation and raw material specifications. Compound ingredients, additives used and allergen sources should be addressed completely and clearly in the design.
Energy, nutrition table and claims
Review the basis on which values are given, their units and the relationships between fields in the table. Assessing a nutrition claim requires data demonstrating that the product meets the relevant conditions; the wording on the packaging alone is not enough.
Operator, quantity, date and use
Operator information, net quantity, origin, date and batch fields, and storage or use instructions should be reviewed in light of the product’s nature and the applicable rules.
The review workflow in Gıda Etiketi
The new system considers label information read from PDFs and images under the relevant review topics. Its aim is not simply to display a result, but to make clear which information was read, which condition was assessed and which point needs clarification. For details, see the application’s user guide.
- Prepare and upload the file. Provide all relevant sides of the same product in a readable file.
- Review the information read. Compare the text used in the report with the source packaging.
- Examine the review explanations. Distinguish missing documentation, a reading problem and genuinely missing content.
- Verify the correction in the final version. When the design changes, recheck the relevant fields and the claims connected to them.
Use automated checks alongside expert assessment
Information that cannot be read in an image is not necessarily missing from the product’s label. Likewise, reading a field does not mean its information has been verified against the product documentation. The final assessment should consider current official texts, the formulation, specifications and necessary analyses together.
The Ministry’s announcement updating the labelling guide is a reminder to follow official guidance as well. For product-specific regulatory questions, you can continue with Gıda Mevzuatı AI, and for technical support with Brix food labelling consultancy.
Gıda Etiketi is a preliminary review tool. Its report does not replace an official compliance certificate or an approval covering every condition of the product. Its value lies in supporting a systematic review before printing and making unresolved issues visible.
